Residents take action for missing link

15 April 2016

Residents of the Woodvale Estate and surrounding areas in Burpengary have come together to call on the Moreton Bay Regional Council to complete an unfinished pathway on Paradise Road.

Local resident Janelle Schlitter was one of many who noticed that the unfinished pathway on Paradise Road meant that her neighbourhood was disconnected from the pathways and bus stops on Morayfield Road.

“My neighbour lost her right leg over 12 months ago due to a vein disease which has confined her to a wheelchair.  Without a pathway, it is very difficult and dangerous for her to wheel herself & her 5 year old daughter to the bus stop on Morayfield Road. Because the pathway is unfinished, I’ve also noticed that many local residents are forced to walk, push a pram, cycle or scoot out on a narrow, busy road. There is just room for two medium size cars to pass let alone one of them being a large vehicle & a wheelchair” Ms Schlitter said.

“I wanted to do something about it, so I got in contact with our local MP – Mark Ryan – and asked him what we could do about it.”

“Mark told us that while this issue was a matter for the Moreton Bay Regional Council, he was happy to work with us on a petition calling on the Council to complete the pathway.”

State Member for Morayfield, Mark Ryan MP, said that there was a clear need for a pathway along Paradise Road and residents expressed great support for the idea.

“I went out doorknocking with Janelle and every resident we spoke with thought it was a terrific idea to complete the ‘missing link’,” Mr Ryan said.

“I also spoke with Councillor Peter Flannery about supporting the petition and he was pleased to get on board. Peter works hard for the community and I know he’ll do his best to help out with this request.”

Division Two Councillor, Peter Flannery, took delivery of the residents’ petition today and committed to raise their request with Council officers.

“I want to thank the residents for getting on board with this issue and for bringing it to my attention,” Mr Flannery said.

“I’ll take this away and speak with Council officers about how best to progress a pedestrian solution for the residents.”

Ms Schlitter said that she was thrilled with the support from the residents and thanked them for being involved in her neighbourhood campaign.
