Legislative changes have been introduced in Parliament this week to ensure that local people with disability have the same level of safeguards and quality of service as they transition to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).
State Member for Morayfield, Mark Ryan MP, said the changes had resulted from a review of legislation carried out by the Queensland Government in readiness for the NDIS rollout.
“Some gaps were identified in the existing legislation, which meant safeguards would not apply for NDIS participants who purchased supports directly from non-government organisations,” Mr Ryan said.
“The Government has acted quickly to fix that.
“This amendment will ensure Queensland’s robust quality and safeguards system will continue to support all people with disability as we transition to the NDIS.”
Mr Ryan said these safeguards included the Department of Communities, Child Safety and Disability Services’ complaints management processes, criminal history screening and restrictive practices framework.
“The NDIS will benefit thousands of Queenslanders with disability, their families, carers and the wider community,” he said.
The Amendment Bill will now be examined by the Communities, Disability Services and Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Committee.
