State Member for Morayfield Mark Ryan announced that young drivers in our region are set to receive a significant boost, with the Rotary Club of Caboolture’s Youth Road Safety Program awarded funding from the 2018 Community Road Safety Grants.

Throughout Queensland more than $708,000 will be shared between 49 Queensland schools, community groups and not-for-profit organisations to improve road safety in their local areas over the next three years.

Mark Ryan said these grants were a great example of the Palaszczuk Government working with community-based organisations on the life-saving issue of road safety. 

“We all have a role to play in keeping our roads safe,” he said.

“All the successful grant recipients across the state are to be commended for their efforts and continued interest in road safety.

“The program that Caboolture Rotary will run here in our local area is so important because it brings safety into focus for school students, who are about to become our next generation of drivers.”

Caboolture Rotary Club President Riana Botha said the Rotary Youth Driver Awareness program will present to classes of Year 11 students as a one-day excursion, with instruction from professional facilitators, including driving instructors, police and a survivor of road trauma.

“We will be serving seven of our nine senior schools within Caboolture, Morayfield and Burpengary during 2019, and we are expecting to have the other two schools from Caboolture and Burpengary on board by 2020,” she said.

“The Rotary Club of Caboolture would like to extend our deepest gratitude to the Transport and Main Roads Department for receiving this grant as it will touch approximately 1180 students during 2019 and will increase yearly as we accommodate more schools.”

Other initiatives to be implemented through the Community Road Safety Grants 2018 funding round across the state include:

• BRAKE youth road safety education program to seven schools across all regions of Queensland
• delivery of childhood road safety education and awareness across 9 kindergartens and primary schools
• delivery of bicycle and scooter road safety education and awareness sessions to 23 kindergartens and schools across the state
• PCYC Bowen for the delivery of their Braking the Cycle learner driver mentor program.
