Don’t Let the LNP Turn Their Backs on Climate Action and Jobs

Written by Mark Ryan MP | Aug 28, 2025 6:01:59 AM

Queenslanders have always backed bold action to tackle climate change — because we know what’s at stake.

From the Far North to the Gold Coast, our state has felt the impact of more frequent and intense floods, fires, heatwaves and cyclones. And we know that unless governments show real leadership, those threats will only grow more dangerous, more costly and more disruptive for our communities.

That’s why Labor legislated ambitious, science-backed emissions reduction targets:

  • 30% reduction by 2030

  • 75% reduction by 2035

  • Net zero by 2050

These targets are backed by detailed plans to deliver clean, affordable, renewable energy while creating over 100,000 jobs especially in regional Queensland.

But now, all of that progress is under threat.

In a deeply concerning move, the LNP’s Energy Minister David Janetzki has refused to commit to our legislated 75% emissions reduction target by 2035. Instead, he’s announced a review, walking away from bipartisan commitments and sowing uncertainty for families, workers, and industries alike.

At the same time, the LNP has confirmed its plan to repeal Queensland’s renewable energy targets undermining private investment and putting the brakes on clean energy development.

Let’s be clear: these laws were passed with a vision to power our state with cheaper, cleaner, reliable energy while protecting jobs, keeping energy assets in public hands, and safeguarding our future.

Reversing course now doesn’t just threaten Queensland’s international reputation — it risks billions in investment, tens of thousands of jobs, and the livability of our communities.

We can’t let them tear up Queensland’s future.

That’s why I’m calling on Morayfield locals to stand up, speak out, and send a clear message to the LNP:
Keep Queensland’s climate targets in law. Protect our jobs. Power our future.
